MEET THE FOUNDER, RACHEL LANDO

In 2012, she woke up petrified.

Rachel felt frozen and hurt everywhere. Her fingers were black, puffy, and completely immovable. After visiting the ER, the hospital reassured her that It was probably nothing.

In that moment, Rachel’s life unknowingly changed forever.

As a 29th birthday present, Rachel received a diagnosis of systemic scleroderma, a rare and incurable autoimmune condition. As the collagen thickened throughout her body, she struggled with extreme fatigue, pain, severe weight and hair loss, facial deformity, joint contractures, loss of lung function, heart irregularities, and GI issues. Life went on.

In 2017, Rachel’s large intestine perforated. Missed in her local ER, Rachel suffered from sepsis and was life-flighted for emergency surgery, a total colectomy, at a major hospital. Waking up several days later in the ICU, Rachel’s sister broke the news that she had survived through major abdominal surgery and now lived with an ileostomy. Intubated, Rachel said nothing, and made a silent promise to get back up.

Once permitted by her physician, Rachel began Physical Therapy Pilates. She had been practicing various styles of yoga and strength training. She also began studying the science behind movement and breath. It all cost a fortune and created real stress.

Suddenly, Rachel found her passion to find a way to offer truly educational and empowering, high quality fitness classes accessible to those living with chronic illness To her, this means absolutely free to those who care to join in movement.

Over the years, Rachel pursued and received advanced certifications in yoga and Comprehensive Pilates, and from Jill Miller’s Tune Up Fitness Certified program. She has studied anatomy through in-person cadaver labs with Yoga Biomechanics author Jules Mitchell and Master Anatomist Gil Hedley. She also enjoys practicing Gyrotonic and whatever movement feels fucking good.

In 2021, Rachel moved forward with her dream and founded Patient Care Movement. PCM offers no-cost classes to those living with limiting conditions, and to help grow a patient care network recently began sponsoring the fitness education of disabled teachers.

Rachel currently works in Park City at Basin Recreation, Enlighten Wellness, and Club Pilates. She can be found in Salt Lake City at Momentum Climbing and TOSH Pilates.

You can also join her online.

“After my diagnosis of a chronic illness my body changed drastically. Between pain and stiffness, I was extremely frustrated and overwhelmed by the changes I was seeing. She has helped relieve and manage pain as well as create a fun atmosphere while doing so. She is so dedicated to her students and really cares about all of us.”
